On December 28, 1973, the U.S. Government announced it was closing its foreign educational credential evaluation service, and the private sector was asked to step forward. It did not, however, nominate, designate or assign any organization as its substitute.
The American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO) and NAFSA: Association of International Educators generously applied themselves in establishing guidelines for applied research and the evaluation of international educational credentials, while at the same time outlining the professional ethics and principles for the profession.
Although, membership in AACRAO/NAFSA assumes adherence to the standards outlined by the two associations, it does not accredit the programs or services of their respective members. The educational credentials evaluation profession is a self-disciplined profession which, at best, abides by and complies with the said guidelines and codes of ethics.
